About
MnDOT District 1, in partnership with the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) and other local project partners, is studying the roadway network along the Highway 61 corridor in Lake and Cook Counties and the Grand Portage Reservation. The study will evaluate the resilience of the roadway network if a weather hazard, crash, or other event causes a closure of Highway 61, and what alternative routes could be used to keep roadway users moving.
The study purpose includes assessing the roadway network’s vulnerabilities to current and future weather events, identifying viable alternative routes to Highway 61, prioritizing resilient infrastructure improvements on Highway 61 and identified alternative routes, and creating action plans in case of a planned or unplanned closure.
The study area is comprised of the southern portions of Lake and Cook Counties and the Grand Portage Reservation, specifically including through roads (state highways, county roads, city roads, township roads, and Forest Service roads) that intersect with and/or provide a viable alternative to Highway 61.
